Inicia actividades en septiembre de 1973 como sede \u00fanica del Centro de Investigaciones Superiores del Instituto Nacional de Antropolog\u00eda e Historia (CISINAH, hoy CIESAS). Sus fundadores son Gonzalo Aguirre Beltr\u00e1n, Guillermo Bonfil, Arturo Warman y \u00c1ngel Palerm. Hasta 1982 fue sede \u00fanica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En 2008 se le confiri\u00f3 el car\u00e1cter de Unidad, adem\u00e1s, en esa fecha contaba con 64 de los 142 profesores investigadores que actualmente est\u00e1n distribuidos en las seis sedes ubicadas en diferentes estados de la rep\u00fablica mexicana. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Actualmente es la unidad  con el mayor n\u00famero de investigadores, los cuales se agrupan en cinco \u00e1reas, cuatro de car\u00e1cter tem\u00e1tico, en las que  se discuten pol\u00edticas acad\u00e9micas, proyectos de investigaci\u00f3n, seminarios permanentes, coloquios, eventos especiales y las l\u00edneas de especializaci\u00f3n de los cuatro programas de posgrado: Maestr\u00eda en Antropolog\u00eda Social, Doctorado en Antropolog\u00eda;
